Beginner Guide - First Run Tips & Chip Basics

New to Kernel Hearts? This beginner guide walks you through your first run: the M.A.H.O.U Unit, chip loading basics, co-op setup, and your path through the Tower of Babel.

Quick Answer: What to Do First in Kernel Hearts

Complete the introductory quest chain on Floor 1 and upgrade your MAHOU.OS chips before anything else. The chain teaches the weakness system and hands you the Guardian Sigil for free; the chip upgrades make everything after it trivial. Do not rush upward, do not hoard fragments, do not skip co-op setup — quest first, chips second, everything else third.

Your First Hour, Step by Step

  • Complete the gate tutorial: one angel encounter, one chip-loading lesson. The game hands you both weapon styles here.
  • Take the introductory chain and complete "thin the patrols" — the angel swarm teaches ranged weakness play.
  • Farm chip fragments on the main path until you hold enough for a full chip loadout upgrade.
  • Configure your MAHOU.OS at the laboratory hub. This is the checkpoint the whole early game is aimed at.
  • Finish the chain ("activate the three signal beacons") and receive the Guardian Sigil.

The One System That Matters: Elemental Weakness

Every enemy is attuned to an element and weak to its opposite. Hitting the weakness doubles damage; hitting the attunement heals the enemy. Fire-line enemies (both guardians, two of three characters) are weak to Ice — which is why Ice chips are the only ones veterans load in bulk. Learn the character table before your first boss attempt, not after.

Open the characters page and check an enemy weakness before any fight you are unsure about. Chip coatings are cheap; dying is not.

What Comes After Floor 1

The Floor 1 Guardian drops the Floor Access Key, which opens The Heavenly Courtyard — the endgame floor. The jump in difficulty is the largest in the game: everything there assumes upgraded chips, healing items and clean play. If the Guardian fight felt hard, farm Floor 1 a little longer; the Courtyard will wait.
